Some Excellent Elements of ArcheAge

After my little “I quite,  and no you can’t have my stuffz” post I was still doing a little thinking afterwards. The failures of ArcheAge are well documented by now, here and elsewhere and are too numerous to go into detail. I think most that have followed the title for a time know about them. I don’t want to dwell on that too much any more as I’ve moved on and have more been reflecting on the elements I enjoyed instead.

Abandoning ArcheAge

So it’s now been, I think 3 weeks since I’ve been in ArcheAge and I haven’t really missed it. I was playing rather intensely and then took a break when the family was up and staying at our house and then, only logged in once more and haven’t been back.

There are a lot of mechanics to draw me back but they just didn’t work any more. I had a few farms and farmhouse over down in Hellswamp which often served as the staging point for my trade runs as well as just random sheep tending and killing to make money. I was slowly earning and upgrading my character through this which was nice.

The Power of Zerg Compels you

The one thing I’ve noticed about pvp mmo’s or those that are more based around open pvp is that they are rather unbalanced by numbers. It is the zergs that often dominate and I find that far more damaging than the frequency and style of ganking. Getting ganked is fleeting but zergs are often able to completely dominate a server when they are on and get increased rewards because of it.

Archeage and Continuing the Cash Shop Hate

Archeage makes me hate free to play, and no that isn’t so kind of hyperbolic. I’ve always been rather partial on the payment model and even supportive at times as it does have many good points. Now I’ve ranted about this all before, a huge AAA rant of awesomeness with part 1 and part 2 still available for your viewing pleasure and I thought that would be the end of it. Unfortunately I find myself in the same position again of liking a game, or liking what it could have been but with a monetization scheme that does it’s best to ruin that for me and now I’m becoming far more negative about ftp in general.

Auroria and Housing Hacks

I was rather dismissive of people’s concerns about housing given the game started. You’ll get some eventually as people leave and places go unpaid I said.

I saw the hackers and such claiming these lands without any contest, immediately upon them coming available and before the client was even aware. This went unpunished for a long time and while there were certain bans lately that went out it seems they missed a lot of these land moguls. The programs for this type of hack still work with impunity.

A Night in Hasla

To test out all this recording and uploading business I thought to record a little Archeage PvP action. This type of thing is a pretty regular activity for the guild as Hasla is where you farm tokens in Archeage for decent weapons. An activity that’s being pushed even more with the next Update. Oh.. and we’re totally being bullies and trying to own the whole area..=p

The actual run was well over an hour so I compressed it a little and sped the whole thing up to be around 20. Played around with images inside as well as a few effects and there you go. The 10 hours it took to upload on my net was the worst though lol.

Healing Again in Archeage

I have to say that it’s kind of nice being back in a proper healing roll once more. The games recently it’s more been some sort of damage support situation you had to be happy with. My dragon knight in ESO was focused on Shielding and control and Guild wars 2 really didn’t have any dedicated healer types. Just situational skills on cool down. Wildstar was the same, everyone does everything kind of thing and I ended up going a Warrior to smash things anyway, which was fun but just not as satisfying.

Archeage and Pay to Win

I have an admission to make about Archeage. One that pains me to say but after a lot of thought is something I can’t ignore. Archeage is Pay to Win. Now I don’t mean that in some kind of esoteric “Every FtP game is Pay to Win” kind of way but that Archeage falls trap to the issue of buying power that gives a distinct advantage over others.

Handi-Crafting

Now that I’ve got the gear basics, the quest gear and Hasla weapon I’ve been focusing more and more on the crafting aspects of Archeage. I’ve been farming all along, bananas and sheep to make a little gold and for trade packs but the other trade skills have mostly gone untouched. Well not entirely, it’s funny just how much the random crafting you do refining things and such actually gives you over time so I have a reasonably amount experience in quite a few crafts.

A Home for Hacking

I have been paying close attention towards the issues ArcheAge has been having. It hasn’t seriously affected me just yet but still been this dark cloud hanging over the experience. I know there’s rain and lightning somewhere but it’s not in my part of the experience just yet.

I have noticed quite a few issues large enough with the level, predominance and widespread nature of hacking, botting and exploits that I have been, and am going to be rather cautious going forward. Just being a bit more reserved in the way I would invest money knowing it. I don’t want to put any more into a game knowing that there are some serious game breaking issues there and issues that will and probably already do affect my own, and definitely a lot of the people around me.
